Matthias Bethge is Professor at the University of Tübingen and Founding Director of the Tübingen AI Center. His research bridges neuroscience and machine learning and pioneered neural style transfer — the first deep learning method to re-render images in artistic styles. His current work focuses on developing and evaluating agentic AI systems for science that enable continual, compositional, and personalized learning. He is co-founder of MADDOX.AI, a precision-tech company for industrial quality control, and of the ELLIS Initiative, a European network for excellence in AI research. Bethge leads the ELIAS Alliance, bringing together public AI institutions to foster European leadership in innovation through AI and science.
